Hyderabad: No rain, but match washed out; fans feel let down

Hyderabad: The overnight showers were enough for the third and final T20 match between India and Australia to be declared as an abandoned tie on Friday. Ironically, even as the city experienced heavy rains on Friday, there was no rain at Uppal. But the damage was done by Thursday’s downpour.

The big crowd that had turned up at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, were in for a huge disappointment. They had stunned looks when they initially saw the match being delayed and their suspicion grew stronger when there was no toss at 6 30 pm. But the announcement was made that an inspection would be held at 7 pm. Thereafter, there were anxious looks as the match referee Richie Richardson and the two captains Virat Kohli and David Warner had a series of discussions. Their main concerns were the wet patches in the outfield which could be dangerous to players. The match was finally called off at 8.15 pm.

However, the spectators heaved a sigh of relief as the money would be refunded to the ticket holders. The clause clearly says that refund will be made if the match is cancelled without a ball being bowled. But the moot question is that did Hyderabad Cricket Association bungle in their preparation to this big match? Did they not make adequate arrangements while covering the entire field? How did the water seep into the ground? It truly left a bad taste.
