Periyapatna: A 35-year-old male elephant, which was rescued by the Forest Department around three days back, died at around 10.30 pm yesterday as it failed to respond to the treatment provided by the veterinarians.

The elephant had fallen into a gorge near the forest area sharing its border with Kogilawadi village near Aanechowkur. Later, the forest officials including RFO R. Girish and ACF Somaiah rushed to the spot and were able to rescue the jumbo with the help of elephants Krishna and Abhimanyu which brought from Thithimathi elephant camp. Dr. Mujeeb, the veterinarian, was  providing treatment for the elephant. Unfortunately, it passed away last night.

The forest officials buried the elephant after the post-mortem this morning. DFO Sabath Hussain, ACF Somaiah and others were present.
