HTC Vive created waves when it was launched in April last year. It was then the only notable competitor to the Oculus Rift. The Taiwanese OEM was, however, slow to roll out its VR headset to international markets and after much delay, it has launched the Vive in India today.

The HTC Vive is not like the other budget virtual reality headsets that are available in the market. It is, in fact, a self-sufficient device that doesn’t need a smartphone to function. HTC likes referring to its Vive as a complete VR solution as the headset comes with wireless VR controller, room scale movement and a head mounted display featuring a built-in camera.

The Vive uses Valve’s Steam VR tracking and input technologies for its providing the immersive VR experience. Thanks to its full room scale 360-degree solution you can physically walk around in the room to explore the virtual space from all angles. HTC promises that its headset is capable of delivering high quality graphics of 90 frames per second video.

The standalone virtual reality headset comes with hundreds of VR apps. These apps can be downloaded from HTC’s proprietary app store called Viveport. Apart from VR supported apps, the Viveport also has tailor-made VR contents across multiple genres ranging from education to sports.

As a promotional offer, HTC will be offering two VR ready apps namely Everest VR and Richie Plank Experience for free when you purchase the Vive headset in India. Among them, the Everest VR app will teleport you to the Mount Everest and provide you a virtual yet thrilling experience of climbing the world’s highest peak.

Speaking about the HTC Vive launch, Mr. Faisal Siddiqui, President-South Asia, HTC said, “We are delighted to launch Vive in India. Vive has totally transformed the way we interact with the world, bringing ultimate mainstream experience to the consumer. Now consumers and developers can experience immersive virtual reality in a way that reshapes human imagination beyond boundaries.

The HTC Vive is priced at Rs 92,990 in India, which is quite high considering its launch price of $799 (Rs 51,626 approx.) In fact, this is by far the costliest VR headset available in the country. The VR headset will be available via Amazon, pre-orders for which starts from April 22. That aside, HTC plans to sell the VR headset via select offline stores across the country. These stores will also have an interactive Vive demonstration station which will be fully open to public for individual experience sessions.
