Long way to go for badminton in Spain, feels Carolina Marin

Hyderabad: The passion for the game is what keeps an athlete going and setting new targets. Apart from that, what keeps them motivated is the support and craze from the fans. However, despite winning a gold in the Rio Olympics and becoming World No.1, winning all the top class championships, at times it is hard for Carolina Marin. Badminton is a game which is still finding its feet in Spain. When compared to other games like football or tennis, badminton has a much lesser fan base.

Speaking about the game’s status in Spain, the World No.4 Marin said, “The problem is comparing the game of badminton with the popular games like football is unfair. Football is a very popular game and it is not just a game there, it is part of the life. But the trend is changing now. More people are aware of the game of badminton now and people recognise the players.

That is a good thing now. But when you compare it football or tennis, there is a lot of gap, she said.

The popularity of the game in India is another reason that motivates her to play in PBL. “The PBL is one of the best leagues in the world with so many people coming and watching, cheering for you. And the level of competition is as good as any other tournaments, she added.

At the age of 24, she has won every tournament that is on the offer including Olympic medal, All England Championship, World Championships and many super series titles. But what keeps her motivate? “That is very tough. I got serious injury after the Olympics as well. Sometimes it gets tough. But I have to think that I am just 24 years old and I need to win more Olympic medals, more All England Championships and more super series titles.

Talking about her fitness, she said that she was yet to get 100 per cent fit. “I’m coming back from an injury. I am not yet fully fit. But I am happy with the way I am playing right now. Hopefully I will get full fitness before the All England Championship. But I am looking forward to playing in Indonesia, Malaysia and India before that.

When asked about who could be a serious threat for her in the All England, she said she can’t look at few individuals as a threat. “I don’t think I can point at few people. All the players in world top 10 are a serious threat. Any one of them can win the title. Playing against each one of them is a challenge. All are very good and I need to focus on what I have to do on that particular day, she added.05
