Tweeple go glum as news of Channel V signing off spreads

Hyderabad: From hip music to the coolest VJs, Channel V was THE channel to tune into for many, especially the 90s generation. The channel had a special place in the viewers’ heart, especially for the pre-YouTube era, being the prime source for the latest music and entertainment.

Channel VFrom Anu Menon’s Lola Kutty, VJ Andy and Munish Makhija’s Udham Singh, Channel V set the mark for video jockeys. Names like Anusha Dandekar, Purab Kohli and Sophiya Haque became part of teen talk and role models for VJs across the country through Channel V.

But, with the expansion of the television industry, advent of more competitors and perhaps, flawed strategies too, the channel struggled to maintain viewership. A switchover from being a music channel to a youth-oriented channel by completely shutting down music broadcast and including more of youth driven content did not help.

Channel V

Its attempt to revive Channel V failing, Star India appears to have given up and if the grapevine is to be believed, has decided to tune out completely. A Kannada sports channel is said to be in the making to replace Channel V. The news triggered ripples online and social media is now filled with nostalgic notes as Twitteratis are going all melancholic over the news of the closure of this 20-year-old Indi-pop culture space.
