TS partnering with tech firms on Digital Telangana

Hyderabad: The Telangana government’s Digital Telangana project is being implemented with collaboration with big technology companies like IBM, Microsoft, Intel and also startups. In terms of creation of infrastructure and also software for various projects under the Digital Telangana, the government is developing various facilities in health, agriculture, urban flooding and weather forecast. And for this purpose various technology companies are developing these facilities by either providing infrastructure and/or technology support.

For example Microsoft is working with the government for their e-agri programme that shows weather, soil and other information on a tab to the agriculture extension officer. In addition, a startup called Vex Technologies is developing an app on urban flooding. Overall, the government has collaborated with 20 technology companies – both big and small – to work with them.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new product by Hexagon Capability Centre India, IT and Industries secretary Jayesh Ranjan said, “Digital Telangana stands on two pillars supply and demand. The supply side of it includes creation of digital infrastructure like laying of optic fibre network, 4G coverage, Wi-Fi hotspots and setting up of digital kiosks. However, we realised that just providing infrastructure is not enough, technology should make a difference in the lives of the people. For this purpose, we have partnered with 20 technology companies to work with us.”

Highlighting some of the initiatives taken by the State in Digital Telangana, he added that about 1,500 Wi-Fi hotspots in the State have been set up and another 1,500 will up in the next three months. These hotspots will also move into towns like Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad in the coming future. In terms of digital kiosks, the State has set up 1,500 on ground in different panchayats out of the 8,700 in TS.

“For digital literacy, we plan to make each member of the household to be digitally literate and there are still 4 million households that do not have a single person digitally literate,” Ranjan said.
